Curly Hair Extensions 101

Clip-In Extensions

What are curly clip-in hair extensions?

Curly clip-ins are temporary hair extensions with built-in clips for easy attachment. They blend with natural curly hair for instant volume, length, and definition.

How long do curly hair extensions last?

With proper care, high-quality curly hair extensions can last 6 months to a year. Regular maintenance, gentle handling, and using the right products are key to extending their lifespan.

Can you straighten curly hair extensions?

It’s best to avoid heat styling as much as possible to preserve the curl pattern and longevity of the extensions. If you must use heat, always apply a heat protectant spray and use the lowest heat setting on your tools.

Where to get curly hair extensions?

Curly Heaven offers the best curly extensions on the market!

Curly hair extensions for short hair
  • Best Lengths: 12–16" (avoids overwhelming short hair).
  • Installation Trick: Use shorter wefts at the crown for a tapered look.
Do curly clip-ins damage natural hair?

No! Clip-ins are the least damaging extensions because they don’t require glue, heat, or chemicals. Just avoid sleeping or swimming with them.

How many clip-ins do I need for full hair?

Typically 6–10 wefts (for medium thickness). Thin hair: 5–7 wefts. Thick hair: 8–12 wefts.

Can you sleep or shower with curly clip-ins?

No. Remove them before sleeping/showering to prevent tangling and matting.

Can human hair extensions be colored?

Yes, but with caution:

  • Dye/toner: Safe for virgin/Remy hair.
  • Avoid: Bleaching bonded/tape-ins (weakens adhesive).

Pro Tip: *Consult a stylist—over-processing causes dryness.*

Do human hair extensions shed?

Minimal shedding is normal.

Is shedding & tangling normal?

Some tangling and shedding is completely normal and occurs on all hair extensions but especially with curly ones.

Prevent it by:

  • Storing hair loosely braided.

See tips on how to prevent shedding and detangling here.

Can I swim in my extensions?

Ocean: We do not recommend wearing hair extensions in the ocean or getting them wet at the beach. Salt water can be very damaging to extensions — it strips moisture, roughens the cuticle, and can cause severe tangling and matting. Unlike our natural scalp hair, extensions do not receive oils from the scalp, making them more vulnerable to dryness and damage from salt exposure.

Pools: We do not recommend swimming with hair extensions in chlorinated pools. Chlorine (a form of bleach used to disinfect pool water) can be extremely harsh on extensions. It strips away moisture, weakens the hair strands, and can cause discoloration, dryness, tangling, and brittleness.

Tape-In Extensions

What are tape-in hair extensions?

Tape-in hair extensions are semi-permanent hair extensions that use medical-grade adhesive tapes to attach wefts of hair close to the scalp. They are lightweight, lay flat, and blend seamlessly with natural hair.

How many tape-in extensions do I need?

Most people need about 3-6 bundles for a full head, depending on hair thickness and desired volume.

How long do curly tape-in extensions last?

With proper care, curly tape-in extensions can last 6-8 weeks before needing to be moved up or reinstalled. Regular maintenance, gentle handling, and using the right products are key to extending their lifespan.

Can you reuse tape-in hair extensions?

Yes! Tape-in extensions can be reused 2–4 times if removed and reinstalled carefully. The key is proper removal and fresh adhesive tape.

Are tape-in extensions good for thin hair?

Yes! Tape-ins are ideal for thin hair because they’re lightweight and don’t require heat or glue.

Do tape-in extensions damage your hair?

When applied and removed correctly by a professional, tape-ins are one of the least damaging extensions. Avoid pulling or improper removal to prevent breakage.

Other

What is Remy human hair?

Answer:

  • Remy: Cuticles are intact and aligned (minimizes tangling).
  • Virgin: Never chemically processed (highest quality).

Pro Tip: *"Remy hair lasts 2x longer than non-Remy."*

Can I order a single sample piece?

Individual sample hair pieces are not available for separate purchase.

Each order includes a sample hair piece, allowing customers to assess the hair's quality, color, and curl pattern to ensure that the extensions align with their preferences before making a full commitment.

Can I wash the sample hair piece?

No, the sample piece can not be altered or tampered with (such as washing or styling) until you decide you keep your set.

How are extensions measured?

Our extensions are initially measured when they are straight, it's important to note that their curly nature leads to some degree of shrinkage

Length: Measured straight (e.g., 16" curly may shrink to 12").

What is the best way to dispose of human hair extensions?

If your extensions have reached the end of their life, here are a few eco-conscious options:

  1. Reuse or Repurpose: Use old hair for practicing styling, making hair accessories, or adding volume to wigs or ponytails.
  2. Donate: Some local organizations or artists may accept clean, unused human hair for creative projects.
  3. Compost (if untreated): 100% human hair that hasn’t been dyed or chemically treated can be composted in small amounts—it breaks down as a natural material over time.
